playlist

Ever since we graduated from college in 1998, me and a small circle of friends have decided to make a compilation of our favorite songs for the year. Which nicely dovetails with my habit of remembering events according to what song was playing at the time.

As the state of pop music degenerates, as the radio waves and MTV become barren wastelands, as my ability to purchase CDs decreases, and as Napster shuts down, my playlist has become more and more populated with worthless ear candy. It's really only the bizarre associations with fond memories that make them worth mentioning.

A.D. 2000
Lost, lost. No name, no business, no Precious, nothing. Only empty.

A.D. 1999
A journey. Angels. And the voice of the wind.

A.D. 1998
Memories from the corner of my mind.

A.D. 1997
I promise I'm over it now. But I'm still alone.

Song Journal for 2001

I thought I'd start collecting songs for the next CD now, because I always tend to bias my mixes towards the end of the year. Although I seriously doubt I'll really add all of these.

Sometimes a song just works, you know. Whether or not it's a good song, it'll just crystallize the very thoughts in your mind.

(BTW, today is my mom's birthday!) I came to realize a couple of things today. Like I said, there will be bad days, and there will be good days, and you just gotta keep saving up the sunlight while you can.

U2 and A-ha
"The Sun Always Shines on a Beautiful Day"

Why these are the songs I remember, I don't know why. Something about 1:30am. The weirdest things stick in your head. Most of the Asians in my class went out for Korean BBQ and Karaoke, in celebration of Jennifer Choi's birthday. These songs were from the drive home, as we all desparately tried to stay awake and make sure we weren't swerving off the road. (I exaggerate for effect, but it was kind of funny.) There are other thoughts, too many to articulate. Maybe later.

Madonna
"What It Feels Like for A Girl (Paul Oakenfold remix)"

DJ Encore
"I See Right Through to You"
